Four-week Portrait Clinic

Instructed by Tim Parsley

Self Portrait by Tim Parsley

Throughout the history of western art, portraiture has been a popular artistic practice. For most people, their earliest drawings as children are of a human face. While often relegated to the realm of the commercial art market, portraits operate with many functions, not the least of which as mirrors of ourselves. Even a portrait of a stranger can have the magnetic ability to pull us into its gaze and lead us to consider the greater connections with humanity. Portraits often go beyond capturing only a person’s likeness and are able even to summon the essence of an individual’s personality. In fact, the word portrait comes from the Latin portrahere, which means “to draw forth and reveal.”

Structured in an intensive 4-week format, the Portrait Clinic is designed to help instruct and inspire people in this age-old practice that remains relevant today. While there are many approaches to the effective depiction of the head and face, this clinic will cover the fundamentals of accurate proportion, facial anatomy, and the practical application of representational drawing techniques translated to the specific discipline of portraiture. The sessions will feature group teaching, individual critique, instructor demonstrations and drawing from a live model.

While open to everyone, this course is an ideal option for those interested in Manifest’s instructed courses, but who are unable to commit to a 10-week class.

Required materials: Charcoal or graphite pencils, sketchbook, paper (minimum size 11”x14”).

COST: $125
($90 for students enrolled in high-school or college progarm*)

Tuition covers the cost of the four-week workshop. Materials and supplies are not provided.  Tuition is non-refundable except in the event of complete workshop cancellation.

*Stud

LEVEL OF STUDY: This course is designed to match the needs of anyone wanting to explore portraiture. The instructor will address the limitations and advanced needs of each student on an individual basis. This is an ideal course for eager high school students to improve pre-college skills and develop portfolio materials, for college students wanting more instruction and opportunity to study portraiture in order to complement their study towards a degree, and for professionals who simply want to push their discipline farther.

TERM: This is a FOUR MEETING (12 hour) workshop designed for those not able to participate in weekly courses across a ten-week term.

SCHEDULE:
Mondays July 12 - August 2, 6-9p.m.
