Description

“If I were unable to speak, I could make something and show it to you, and you would get the idea without my having to verbalize it.”

— Sheila Hicks

How do you maintain a studio practice? Where do you find your artistic community? What do you need to move your work forward in a meaningful way?

This rolling class will help you develop your art-making practice and deepen your connection to your craft. Come curious, and you will learn to think more critically about your work, experiment with new directions in your studio, and share in a community of rigor and support with equally dedicated artists.

Each meeting will begin with a hands-on-making exercise to challenge your assumptions about your creative practice. The second half of each session will be spent in group discussion, where you will share 1-3 pieces of your personal work made outside of class. The time will be divided evenly between each participant, and you will have an opportunity to receive open, honest, and attentive feedback on your artwork. The class will meet every other week, giving you time to reflect on our conversations and create work at your own pace.

This class will cover the following topics:

  • Developing a personalized, sustainable studio practice
  • Considering the intersection between subject, form, and content in your work
  • Constructive criticism and participating in a community of support

Level of Study

This class is for individuals with art-making experience interested in developing their personal artistic practice. Foundational knowledge of the materials and techniques an artist uses in their studio is recommended, and the curiosity and drive to create art outside of a classroom setting is a must!

Tuition*

7-meeting Block: $315
Covers seven consecutive class meetings (roughly spanning 13 calendar weeks from a student’s first class meeting to their last)*

One makeup session for one absence may be added to the end of a 7-week session. Students are also encouraged to attend the Drawing Center’s FREE Open Studios, offered every Friday afternoon, 1:30-4pm, or Sunday afternoon, 2:30-5:00pm, as an extension of this class. This is optional for those who are interested. Required (FREE) tickets to Open Studios can be claimed here.

About the Instructor

Samantha Haring is a Midwest painter from Des Plaines, Illinois. She makes quiet paintings in a noisy world. Haring earned her MFA from Northern Illinois University and her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has also studied in Italy at the International School of Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture; it was there that she fully developed her commitment to light, color, and observational painting. Haring’s work has been published in New American Paintings and recent Manifest International Drawing and Painting Annuals.

Haring was one of the 2015-2016 Artists-in-Residence at Manifest Gallery. She has been a Resident Instructor at the Drawing Center since 2016; she also teaches drawing and design courses at the University of Cincinnati’s School of Design. She currently maintains a studio in Cincinnati, where she spends an inordinate amount of time staring at the color of dust.
