Tonal Drawing in Charcoal is a five-week sequential course which will emphasize the importance of value relationships as the foundation of rendering three-dimensional objects. Charcoal can be used with painting in mind. Unlike the linear quality of graphite, charcoal allows for a wider variety of mark making. It can cover large areas of paper quickly and create rich, deep tones.
Initially, we will establish the composition with large shapes of light and shadow. Then we will enhance the drawing using chiaroscuro shading. The refined tonal structure works as a visual hierarchy to direct viewers through the picture plane.
