Classical Drawing in a Contemporary World is a formal ten-week course that provides expert instruction in traditional skill-based drawing methods. The sequential class begins with processes of perception, including blocking-in and careful measuring. Students will progress from the use of line to establish composition and structure, to working in value to develop the three-dimensional interpretation of observed subjects. The course will use simple still-life objects, the requisite plaster cast, anatomical models including a full-size cast of Houdon’s L’Ecorché originally sculpted in 1767, classical portrait busts, and a full-size medical grade human skeleton. Classical Drawing will increase in complexity where deemed appropriate by the instructor and desired by the student. Individual guidance and a holistic approach are important aspects of all Manifest courses.
There will be a commitment to longer drawings mid-way through the course where the student can begin developing his or her preferred medium and individual voice while continuing to master the basic issues of drawing from observation. The course is structured so that it can be repeated in subsequent terms with continual advancement in level of instruction.
Media to be used may include, but will not be limited to: graphite, conté crayon, silver point, charcoal, inkwash, and pastel. A complete list of materials will be provided one-week prior to the start of the course.
