statement

Depicting sleeping beings is a response to fleeting yet static episodes that, by their very stillness, call attention to the inevitability of change. The removal of the individual from the social sphere and the internal workings of ìotherî capture the imagination in what is achingly inaccessible. The agency of paint and indexical process of making play a role in the experience of the painting and echo this balance of stillness and change. While there is immediacy in recognizing an image, I hope to suspend the viewer in the accrual and disappearance of mark and the negotiation had between material and image, what is and what is not. I draw upon myths of transformation, the a-temporality of poetry, and sensory discord to help form more literal visual translations of the intangible. This is expressed through intentional pictorial incongruities, vagueness of setting, and the lack of interaction between subject and viewer.
