statement

Painting landscapes is an interactive experience responding both to the environment and the object being painted. I find working from landscapes gives me the mental and physical space to reconnect.  A good painting day not only includes the painting, but the experience of getting to know the world around me on a more intimate level--the stillness of looking versus seeing.  I find that when I haven't painted in awhile I miss the nuances of the atmosphere, the shift in seasonal light, the weight of the air, and the general character of the land.  We live in a state of constant change, movement, and stimulation making our surroundings secondary.  I paint not to tell, but to remind myself and others to slow down, there are still good things out there.
